Tui Na Massage is the form of Chinese bodywork most closely resembling conventional western massage. Many of the techniques are similar. Despite the similarities, the intent of Tui Na is more specifically therapeutic than the simple relaxation of a Swedish-style massage.
Tui Na uses the principals of TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine. Tui Na uses massage and finger pressure in a similar way that acupuncture uses needles. In fact Tui Na predates acupuncture by many centuries.
As well as the regular physical techniques of Tui Na there is also what is called QiGong Tui Na.
This is where the practitioner uses their own emitted Qi energy to work with and affect the patients Qi energy. To do this takes many years of Qi Gong or Tai Chi training.
What does it do
One of Tui Na's advantages over simple massage is its ability to focus on specific problems, especially chronic pain associated with the muscles, joints, and skeletal system. It's especially effective for joint pain, muscle spasms, and pain in the back, neck, and shoulders and also injuries. It also helps chronic conditions such as insomnia, constipation, headaches (including migraines), and the tension associated with stress.
In Chinese Tui Na Massage clinics they have special treatments for specific conditions, even one called Computer Syndrome for people who often work at a computer and develop pain in neck, shoulders, arms with eye strain and headache.
Tui Na does not simply work on the muscles, bones, and joints. It works with the energy of the body at a deeper level.
How is it done
Tui Na Massage is done through your clothing, often a cotton sheet is draped over the area being massaged. The massage is done either with the patient sitting in a chair or lying down on a massage couch. Sometimes oil or special medicated massage cream is used where a stronger therapeutic effect is needed such as when working with an injury.
