Tai Chi or Taijiquan combines the three aspects of health exercise, self-defense and meditative mental training in an holistic system. All exercises include mindfully guided and powerful, flowing movements as well as combat applications.

Literally translated, Taiji means the ridge of the roof or the outermost pole.

Figuratively speaking, in Chinese it denotes the ultimate principle and refers to the opposing and also complimentary states of Yin and Yang, which arise from an inseparable whole or Wuji.

The martial arts aspect of Taijiquan is expressed in the addition of Quan. This stands for the curled hand, or fist. Taijiquan can therefore be roughly translated as the fist method of the supreme polar principle.

Tai Chi emphasizes the dynamic flow from one move to the next. The movements are always balanced and centered and use the unique method of Chan Si Jin, or silk reeling energy, a continuous, spiraling internal force used to connect the entire body and move power smoothly.

One could also say that in Taijiquan training, one first learns to increasingly subdivide one's own body, then coordinate these body parts, thereby creating a new physical-mental unity.

Overall, the training cultivates awareness, activates the tissues holistically, breathing is calm and coordinated, while the body and mind are calm, connected and free.

In Chinese, this is expressed as, use the heart/mind to move the Qi (Energy) and use the Qi to move the body. With continuous practice, a Taiji body develops, capable of expressing elastic, relaxed, and connected power.
